Foraging in the city

Did you know that there are an incredible number of edible plants in the wild in the Netherlands? Many of them used to be very common vegetables, some of which were even cultivated by our ancestors…. Now they often stand unknown and unloved on the roadside and are what we call weeds….
It is great fun to get to know these plants again, to discover what they can be used for in the past and now, and especially to taste them!
It makes you look at nature differently, including nature in the city: there is so much more than we know of….

Sustainable foraging
In my opinion, foraging is a wonderful way to reconnect and experience the nature around me. In the city, and actually throughout our Dutch country, nature has been given a limited space. I teach you how to handle that carefully and with respect, so that you don’t deplete or disturb nature. In some cases, you can even help her by properly picking.

Foraging Expeditions

Join me in foraging and ‘wild cooking’ the herbs!

Since 2018, I have been giving foraging expeditions from De Ceuvel from early spring to the heart of winter. What can be found in nature these months? What is growing and blooming at the moment?

After foraging, I love to cook a ‘wild tasting’ with everyone at De Ceuvel. Tasting the selfpicked food adds a lot to the experience!
These Foraging Expeditions are about once a month on a Sunday morning. But they are given in Dutch (see below). You can also book a foraging workshop with me as a group.

English-spoken foraging workshops
The monthly expeditions are currently only given in Dutch. I found out that specifically plant recognition workshops are very difficult to do fully bilingual. At the same time, I suspect that especially in Amsterdam, there are many people who would enjoy learning foraging in this place. And I would love to give them! There are three possibilities to do so:

  • If you understand Dutch enough to understand a normal conversation but just don’t speak it: feel free to join any of the expeditions or even year-round training! No problem if you ask your questions in English and I’ll translate the dutch plantnames for you.
  • Gather a group and book me for a group expedition! If you gather more than 10 people, the price will be the same per person as a regular expedition (max 16  persons)
  • Put yourself on the ‘I would love to have an English spoken foraging’-list here below. If there are enough people on the list, I’ll put out an email to pick a date to go on expedition!

English spoken foraging in Amsterdam!
Signing up will put you on this list. Please add the amount of persons around you that are interested too. If there are 10+ people I will pick a date with you! (And if it becomes an enthousiastic bunch of people, I will start to plan them more regularly at De Ceuvel 😉 )
